CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island psychiatric hospital inmate has been indicted on charges of assaulting patients and employees with a pencil at the Cranston facility.
State Attorney General Peter Kilmartin’s office says the Providence County grand jury announced the indictment of Anthony Tavares, an inmate at Eleanor Slater Hospital, on Wednesday. He’s charged with seven counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of simple assault and two counts of assault on a health care provider
The 32-year-old Tavares is accused of assaulting the patients and workers on June 7 with a pencil, his hands and his feet.
State police conducted an investigation into the alleged assaults.
Tavares is being held at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston and is scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court on Aug. 15.
