McALESTER — An Oklahoma State Penitentiary inmate died recently after starting a fire in his cell.
On Saturday, at approximately 2:45 p.m., an OSP inmate covered his window and started a fire in his cell, according to OSP Warden’s Assistant Terry Crenshaw.
“Security personnel and medical staff responded to the Institutions H-Unit after smoke was noticed coming from the cell of an offender,” Crenshaw said. “Security removed the offender from his cell area.”
Crenshaw said medical personnel immediately provided medical assistance and transported the inmate to OSP’s Medical Unit.
The inmate was then transported to a local hospital, where he died a short time later, Crenshaw said.
“The exact cause of death is unknown at this time,” Crenshaw said. “The Oklahoma Medical Examiners Office has been notified.”
