DUBAI – Two men detained at Al Rashidiya station on drug consumption charges were sentenced to three  years in prison each this morning for breaking into the centre's clinic and stealing medicine.

AM, 25, and AA, 22, both Emirati, did not appear in the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance today. They were convicted of damaging public property, stealing drugs, and assaulting and resisting police officers.

Prosecutors said that on May 29, 2010, AM asked to go to the bathroom. While inside, he unlocked his cuffs.

Records show that he then pushed past the officer guarding him, broke down the clinic's door, rushed inside and began swallowing different tablets. AA, whose cell door was left open, rushed in after him.

Prosecutors said they both assaulted the police officers trying to control them. During the scuffle, all the detainees in the block got out of their cells and started attacking other officers.

Riot police were brought in to control the situation.

AA and AM both ended up unconscious from swallowing so many Rivotril, Valium, Xanax and other types of anti-depressants and sleeping pills.

They have not been sentenced in their original drug-consumption cases.
