Dauphin County inmate died of meningitis
A 26-year-old Dauphin County Prison inmate died Tuesday morning of bacterial meningitis, according to Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick.
Hetrick told CBS 21 News Lee Donnell Golston, who had been incarcerated since August 2 on assault charges, had a severely compromised immune system which left him susceptible to the infection.
"The bacteria that caused the meningitis is something that's found in ever one of us. About 75% of of the population carries it around," Hetrick said. "But if you can't take care of it with your normal immune system it will grow and colonize and that's what happened in this case."
As a precaution, the prison is offering antibiotics to every inmate and employee who has been in the facility since Golston was first put behind bars there, according to Warden Dominick DeRose.
