Richmond City Jail inmate charged with assaulting employee
A Richmond City Jail inmate has been charged with three felonies for allegedly assaulting an employee at the facility.
Richmond Sheriff's Office Maj. Jerry L. Baldwin said Shane T. Foster, 31, was charged with one count each of abduction, attempted murder and assault.
Baldwin said the assault occurred Wednesday inside the jail and involved a female employee who was not seriously injured.
"No hospitalization was required," Baldwin said.
He said the employee was working at the jail on a contract basis, but he declined to elaborate on her job duties or the specifics of the alleged assault. The sheriff's office is continuing to investigate the matter, he said.
"I'm sure in future days more information will be forthcoming," Baldwin said.
Foster was already awaiting trial on a robbery charge. He was arrested April 19 for an alleged robbery in the city earlier that day, according to Richmond Circuit Court records.
Those same records also show Foster was convicted on a robbery charge in November 2007 and sentenced to nearly three years in prison.
Sheriff Woody said, “This is a reminder that our employees work in a dangerous environment and around extremely violent offenders. It is important that we always be on guard to protect ourselves from harm.” Woody continued, “I’m exceptionally proud of the swift action taken by our deputies to prevent further injury to one of our own.” The Sheriff’s Office is conducting a criminal and internal investigation to ensure all proper procedures were followed.
