Cook County Jail inmate Charles Hall has been charged for the second time in two months with an attack on jail correctional officers, with the most recent attack leaving an officer with a broken eye socket.

The 27-year-old was charged with aggravated battery to an officer as a result of the Aug. 10 incident in the maximum security division of jail.

Already being held on $300,000 bond as a result of a July arrest, Hall's bond was increased on Saturday to $650,000 following the latest incident. In July, Hall was also charged with spitting on an officer.

In the latest incident, Hall was being led back inside by an officer when he turned and punched the officer in the face, screaming “I’m going to kill you,” the release said. Hall then continued punching the officer in the face as the officer struggled to detain him.

A nearby officer, following the jail’s use of force standards, deployed pepper spray, but Hall used his uniform to wipe his face and continued pummeling responding officers. Spray was deployed a second time after which he was detained, the release said.

The fifth-year correctional officer suffered a broken right eye socket, as well as bruising to his jaw and forehead, and remains unable to return to work, according to the release. Hall was decontaminated from the spray at Cermak Hospital, but suffered no injuries.

In bond court Saturday, Hall’s next court appearance was set for Sept. 3. He was originally detained on a shoplifting charge for allegedly stealing $36 in merchandise, the release said.

While processing him, jail staff realized he was wanted for failing to register as a sex offender. Hall is listed on the registry for committing an act against a child younger than 9 more than a decade ago, the release said.
