8 Md. inmates hurt in prison fight
Eight Maryland prison inmates were injured Friday night during a multiple stabbing incident at a correctional facility in Jessup, a state corrections spokesman said.
The incidents, which involved two or more separate fights, broke out between 9 and 9:30 p.m. at the Brockbridge Correctional Facility, a pre-release facility, said the spokesman, said Mark Vernarelli.
He said seven inmates were taken to hospitals. One was in serious condition after apparently being stabbed, he said. An eighth inmate was treated at the site, Vernarelli said.
It was not clear how many of the others had also been stabbed. Their conditions were not known immediately.
None of the staff members at the facility on Brockbridge Road was injured, Vernarelli said.
The reason for the outbreak was not immediately known.
It appeared that the fights occurred inside dormitories at the facility, which typically houses a few hundred inmates who are within two years or so of release, Vernarelli said. A state Web site describes Brockbridge as a minimum-security facility.
