Officer Hurt In Jail Scuffle
A Scott County corrections officer is back at work after a jail inmate beat him with a chair last week.
Scott County Sheriff Dennis Conard says the inmate, Casey Westerfield of Rock Island was being disciplined and ordered back into his cell when he grabbed a chair and hit corrections officer Brian Clark. Clark and other officers were able to subdue Westerfield. Clark's injuries did require some stitches in his head, but Conard says he is going to be okay. Conard says there was no reason to consider Westerfield to be violent, but it happens.
"While here sometimes their behavior does not improve. In this case, it got worse. And it's something that correctional officers have to deal with on a daily basis."
Westerfield is now being held in a maximum security holding area on charges of Assaulting an Officer and Harassment. The second charge stems from Westerfield making continual threats to officers while placed in a restraint chair after the incident.
He was originally in jail on a theft charge.
